We tell you our history
SAIM s.r.l. has been active in the stone industry since 1923. Since then it has been the exclusive dealer of the Verzegnis marble quarry. SAIM s.r.l. deals with the extraction and processing of Verzegnis marble and other local materials such as "CARNIQUE GREY".
The "RED VERZEGNIS" quarry is located in the municipality of the same name at an altitude of 1700 metres above sea level. In the first years of activity, the extracted blocks were squared and transported downstream using the lizzatura method. Subsequently, a cableway was built, which was the only means of transporting the blocks from the quarry to the valley floor until the end of the 1970s. Over the years, market demands and the need for mechanical means to optimise extraction made it necessary to build an access road to the quarry. At the end of the 1970s, mining was stopped and the planning of the road began. It was not completed until the mid-1990s. In 1999, SAIM s.r.l. obtained the regional authorisation to cultivate the quarry.
For sixty years, Verzegnis marble was exported all over the world; it was known and appreciated by architects as an elegant and valuable marble. The interruption of quarrying, and consequently its absence from the market for more than twenty years, meant that the marble of Verzegnis became an unknown marble.
Today, extraction is carried out with modern means, which, using new technologies, reduce waste to a minimum, allowing work to be carried out with greater safety. The extracted blocks are squared in the quarry and transported to the Tolmezzo plant where they are transformed into semi-finished and finished products.
The extraction activity is followed by immediate environmental restoration operations in the areas where the quarry is exhausted, respecting and protecting the surrounding environment.
